Recent Birds at Rio Bosque
After a 3-month dry period, water deliveries to the park from the Roberto Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant resumed on 27 April. Our main focus right now is on establishing a flow the full length of the old river channel, with any additional water going to the wetland cells.
Summer resident birds continue to arrive. The first Swainson's Hawks and a Western Kingbird appeared 7 April; the first Black-chinned Hummingbird, 14 April; the first Yellow-breasted Chats, 17 April; the first Lesser Nighthawk, 18 April; the first Bell's Vireo, 21 April.
Our pair of White-tailed Kites, first seen 25 May 2024, has now been present for over 11 months. Both the kites and a pair of Cooper's Hawks are now nesting!
Burrowing Owl activity has been slow, but owls have been seen in recent weeks at 4 different burrow sites.
