Aldo Sanchez
From ϳԹ to Google: A Journey of Strategic Excellence
"Engaging with extracurriculars at ϳԹ's Computer Science played a massive, overwhelming role in my career success."
Nine internship offers in two summers - demonstrating exceptional technical skills and strategic career planning.
Aldo Sanchez, a software engineer at Google currently based in Kirkland, WA, exemplifies the dedication and strategic planning that allows students to excel in computer science. Graduating in Fall 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics from ϳԹ, Aldo completed his degree in just two years while building an impressive portfolio of experiences that led him directly to one of the world's top tech companies.
Academic Excellence and Mentorship at ϳԹ
Aldo's academic journey was significantly shaped by mentorship from a professor involved in Google's residency program. This guidance gave him the confidence to pursue competitive opportunities and develop the skills needed to thrive in the tech industry.
Despite completing his degree in an accelerated timeline, Aldo credits ϳԹ's Computer Science curriculum and its dedicated professors for equipping him with the foundational knowledge and practical skills that would prove essential in his career.
"The department's support, such as fully funded conferences like GMIS, can provide plenty of job opportunities. However, it ultimately comes down to your individual focus."
Leadership and Building Community
Beyond academics, Aldo was deeply involved in student organizations, most notably serving as President of the Coding Interview Club. He also participated in the Society of Physics Students, demonstrating his commitment to building connections across disciplines.
"The strength of word-of-mouth within these communities is invaluable. I appreciate the collaborative 'us together' atmosphere rather than a competitive 'me versus you' mindset. This environment creates a 'hive mind' that serves as a sanity checker, allowing members to double-check their choices and decisions."
His leadership in the Coding Interview Club not only honed his own technical skills but also cultivated an environment that encouraged success among his peers. Aldo values the ability to share opportunities and finds satisfaction in seeing others succeed, enhancing the overall benefits of being part of such groups.
Strategic Conference Participation
Aldo actively participated in various conferences, including GMIS and the Chief National Leadership Conference. His strategic approach to these events proved highly beneficial, securing at least one job offer from each conference he attended.
"Attend if you have the mindset to really focus on an opportunity and prepare well. The department's support, such as fully funded conferences like GMIS, can provide plenty of job opportunities. However, it ultimately comes down to your individual focus."
His advice to students is to approach these opportunities with intensity and focus, treating them as missions rather than casual trips. This mindset allowed him to maximize the networking and career opportunities available at each event.
Life as a Software Engineer at Google
As a software engineer at Google in Kirkland, WA, Aldo's typical day begins around 9:00 AM at the office. His work focuses primarily on Google Drive's iOS client, where he develops comprehensive testing strategies and works on improving user experience.
"Writing code is minimal compared to reading and understanding designs. Knowing what to write is way harder than writing the code."
His morning routine includes breakfast and attending various meetings, ranging from team-wide sessions to one-on-one discussions with senior engineers or managers. These meetings help prioritize tasks and resolve technical problems. Beyond meetings, Aldo spends much of his time reading and understanding code and technical documents.
The Google office environment allows for a balanced workday that includes lunch, dinner, and physical activities like basketball or fitness classes at the office gym. Living close to the office enables him to maximize his time, seamlessly integrating meals and workouts into his daily routine.

"Having someone to bounce ideas off or to seek advice from makes the process much easier."
Moreover, alumni can inspire and motivate students by sharing their success stories. "Seeing someone's journey can be a powerful encouragement to take the first step," he explains. Aldo's own story demonstrates how strategic planning, community involvement, and focused preparation can lead to extraordinary opportunities in the tech industry.
